Part-Time Benefits & Resources

National University offers a variety of benefits and resources to support the well-being of our part-time employees, including medical coverage, access to the 403(b) retirement plan, mental health and well-being resources, tuition waiver benefits, and student loan assistance through SAVI. Regular part-time employees may also be eligible for paid holidays, Winter Recess, bereavement leave, and jury duty leave.


  • Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) Medical Plan for 7/1/2025-6/30/2026

    Overview:

    All part-time faculty and staff may enroll in the MEC Plus + Globe Life plan, which is a cost-effective medical option that provides access to essential healthcare services, including preventive care, telemedicine, and some hospital coverage. View recorded overview of this plan>>


    Direct Pay

    This plan will be available through a direct pay model. That means employees will elect coverage through an online enrollment platform and pay premiums directly. No payroll deductions required.

    • Nationwide PPO network 
    • Includes prescription coverage, limited hospital indemnity benefits, and behavioral health

    California Residents 

    Enrolling in the MEC Plus plan will satisfy the California state requirement for minimum essential coverage.

    Timely Care EAP:

    Find confidential and high-quality 24/7 access to virtual care, self-care, and well-being tools you can use anytime, anywhere.

    • Up to 8 free sessions per calendar year. 
    • After 8 sessions, the cost is $79/session. 
    • TalkNow:  On-demand 24/7, mental and emotional support, health literacy guidance, and crisis management.
    • Schedule virtual appointments with a licensed counselor of your choice, at times that work for you.  Benefits include up to 8 free sessions per calendar year.

  • Tuition Waiver Program

    All National University employees and their eligible dependents are provided the opportunity to enroll in programs offered by NU and other Affiliates with a full or partial tuition waiver following 6 months of continuous employment. The Doctorate and JD programs are limited and require Dean and President approval. If approved, employees will receive a 25% discount on Doctorate and JD programs.


    Who is eligible?

    • Full-time employees: eligible for full tuition waiver
    • Part-time employees: eligible for 25% tuition waiver

    Taxation:


    The waived portion of tuition fees for education at the graduate level is considered by the IRS to be a taxable fringe benefit. Therefore, the waiver amount is subject to withholding, and must be included in gross income that is reported to the IRS. Please consult with your tax advisor to best determine treatment on your tax return

Open Enrollment for Part-Time Medical Plan (MEC Plus + Globe Life)

Open Enrollment for the Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) Plus + Globe Life Medical Plan is here! Open Enrollment is your opportunity to enroll or make changes to your coverage for the upcoming plan year, July 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026. Once Open Enrollment closes, changes can only be made if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) such as marriage, birth, or loss of other coverage.


🔄Passive Enrollment: If you are currently enrolled and take no action, your existing coverage will roll over into the new plan year. 


No benefit plan design or rate changes for the upcoming plan year.

    State Affordable Care Act (ACA) Mandates

    Enrolling in the MEC Plus plan satisfies state Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) requirements for employees residing in California, Washington, D.C., New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Learn more about CA’s minimum essential coverage.

    This plan is direct billed. Premiums are not deducted from your paycheck. Monthly invoices will be mailed to your home address and payments are collected by PIOPAC.

  • Why a Short Plan Year

    National University is transitioning to a calendar-year benefits plan cycle beginning January 1, 2027. This six-month plan year bridges the transition.


    Next Open Enrollment: If you do not enroll/make changes during this open enrollment, your next opportunity to enroll/make changes will be this fall for benefits effective January 1, 2027 - December 31, 2027.


  • Who can enroll

    • Eligible Employees: All part-time faculty and staff and their eligible dependents.
    • Eligible dependents: Child(ren) under age 26, spouse, and registered domestic partner. 

    Please note: You must enroll yourself in order to enroll dependents.
